Description. Lang: en

Hyderabad ( (listen) HY-dər-ə-baad) is the capital and largest city of the Indian state of Telangana and de jure capital of Andhra Pradesh. Occupying 650 square kilometres (250 sq mi) along the banks of the Musi River, Hyderabad City has a population of about 6.9 million, with about 9.7 million in Hyderabad Metropolitan Region, making it the fourth-most populous city and sixth-most populous urban agglomeration in India. At an average altitude of 542 metres (1,778 ft), much of Hyderabad is situated on hilly terrain around artificial lakes, including the heart-shaped Hussain Sagar lake north of the city centre. Located on the Deccan Plateau in the northern part of South India, Hyderabad is a mingling point of Dravidian and Indo-Aryan languages (Telugu, Urdu and Hindi), as well as Hindu and Muslim cultures. The Telugu film industry based in the city is the country's second-largest producer of motion pictures. Considered to be the "pharmaceutical capital of India", Hyderabad is the fifth-largest contributor to India's overall gross domestic product (GDP) with an output of US$74 billion, and is the fastest growing Indian city with an 8.7% annual GDP growth rate. It is home to the largest overseas campuses of several Big Tech companies, including Amazon, Apple, Google and Microsoft. Since 1956, Rashtrapati Nilayam in the city has been the winter office of the President of India.
Established in 1591 by Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah, Hyderabad remained under the rule of the Qutb Shahi dynasty until it was annexed in 1687 by the Mughal Emperor, Aurangzeb. In 1724, the Mughal governor of the Deccan, Nizam Asaf Jah I, declared his sovereignty and founded the Asaf Jahi dynasty, also known as the Nizams of Hyderabad. The Qutb Shahis and Nizams established Hyderabad as a cultural hub, attracting men of letters from different parts of the world. The Nizam's dominions became a princely state during the British Raj, and remained so for 150 years (1798–1948), with the city serving as its capital. Relics of Qutb Shahi and Nizam rule remain visible; the Charminar—commissioned by Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah—has come to symbolise Hyderabad. Golconda Fort, fabled for its diamond trade, is another major landmark. The influence of Mughlai culture is evident in the city's distinctive cuisine, which includes Hyderabadi biryani and Hyderabadi haleem.
Hyderabad was historically known as a pearl and diamond trading centre, and it continues to be known as the "City of Pearls". Until the 18th century, the city was the only global trade center of large diamonds, because of its proximity to Kollur and other mines. Many of the city's traditional bazaars remain open, including Laad Bazaar, Begum Bazaar and Sultan Bazaar. Industrialisation throughout the 20th century attracted major Indian research, manufacturing and financial institutions, including Defence Research and Development Organisation, Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited, Indian Institute of Chemical Technology, National Remote Sensing Centre, National Geophysical Research Institute and Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology. Special economic zones dedicated to information technology and pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries have encouraged companies from India and around the world to set up operations in Hyderabad, leading to the area's nicknames as "Cyberabad" (Cyber City) and "Genome Valley".
